After hearing some reports of people being stopped and even fined for affixing flags to their cars we decided to get to the bottom of the situation.
A quick email to the local police was all it took. We have now been informed that the rules for displaying flags are as follows:-
- Flags or mascots must not be affixed to a vehicle in such a way that it is likely to strike a person with whom the vehicle might collide
- Flags or Mascots must not in any way obscure the driver’s field of vision.
They also went on to say that as long as flags are fixed to rear windows or aerials and point skywards there is no violation. The people who were stopped were stopped because their displays were in violation of the above rules and were a danger to pedestrians or other road users. With the world cup fast approaching remember to follow the rules and keep the flags flying.
